Waist Management

As mentioned in the previous entry, I'm back to share some really great stuff from the book You on a Diet (Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D.). There's a ton of fantastic information in the book, as well as awesome recipes I can't wait to try, but for now, let me share a few factoids with you:

1.  The difference between obese people and thin people isn't the number of fat cells, it's the size of these cells. (pg. 2

2.  Eating nuts does not create the calorie intake that you might expect, because 5% to 15% of the calories are not absorbed by the intestinal system. That's because the nuts' skin and how well we chew nuts influence digestion. (pg. 57)

3.  Most of our body parts are adaptable enough to use multiple energy sources to survive.  Only two organs need sugar directly: the brain and the testes. (pg. 85)

Mood Foods

We know that our moods determine what we're going to eat, and studies have actually proven this to be true.  But did you know that you can learn to identify how you're feeling by becoming aware of the foods you find yourself reaching for?  Here's a short list, taken from page 159 of the book:

(NOTE: They may indicate the emotions listed. Try to be aware of what you're feeling at the time you reach for certain foods to determine whether or not the list is correct for you)

Tough foods (meat, or hard and crunchy food) = angry.

Sugars = depressed

Soft, sweet foods (e.g. ice cream) = anxious

Salty foods = stressed

Bulky foods (e.g. crackers, pasta, etc) = lonely, sexually frustrated

Anything and everything = jealous

You should see some of the illustrations in this book - they're hilarious!    Honestly: the way things are explained and laid out in the book is just too funny. It really puts a whole new spin on peeling off the layers, I'll tell you.

And the peeling should be a fun adventure, not a chore.  There's such a negative mind-set in place about this, and it's high time that changed.  I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

Now, go and get the book, and read it - as many times as you need or want to.  Learn about what happens in your body, get the facts about the "facts" you've been told.  Thanks for dropping by!
